Bi disc with qilin and lingzhi fungus - (6425)
[6425]

Acquired in London in the beginning of the 1970's this bi disc is carved from a beautiful light celadon jade. On one side is a qilin (Wisdom and Harmony) holding a branch of lingzhi fungus (Longevity) in its mouth. The other side shows eight finely carved stylized bird-like creatures which may be phoenixes. The phoenix symbolizes 'Happiness and Prosperity' and is also said to be able to influence fertility. Considering the quality of the carving as well as the material it is very well possible that this disc dates to the Qianlong period (1735 - 1796). Diameter 6.2 cm. Thickness 1.2 cm. Weight 77.0 grams.
