Disc with Yin Yang and Pa Kua - (4949)
[4949]

Thick jade disc with a white spot which resembles half of a Yin Yang design. In fact a Yin Yang design has been carved into the stone on both sides. Also shown are the 'Eight Trigrams' or 'Pa Kua' ('Ba Gua') which were used in divination. The other side of the disc shows eight Chinese seal characters which refer to the eight trigrams for Heaven, Still water, Fire, Thunder, Wind, Moving water, Mountain and Earth. Depicted on the rim are three goats or sheep which symbolize the male principle Yang in Yin Yang (阴 阳). The object originally formed part of the collection of P. de Tanner, late commissioner Chinese Maritime Customs Service in Kiukiang (now Jiujiang), Jiangxi who collected jades in the period 1913 - 1919. It is depicted in a catalogue printed at the occasion of an exhibition in Berlin in 1925 and dates most probably from the Qing period (1644 - 1912). The disc was acquired in the early 1960's in Patna, India and came from a museum collection in that city. It was added to the Lowlands-collection in 1970. Height 16.1 cm. Width 13.9 cm. Thickness 1.8 cm.
