A monkey sits on the back of a horse and looks up. A Monkey (hou) riding a horse (ma) is a pun ‘May you immediately be promoted to the rank of marquis’ (Mashang fenghou). This carving would be the ideal gift to an aspiring official. It was added to the Lowlands-collection in 1970 and dates from the Qing dynasty (1644 – 1912). Length 5.4 cm. Width 1.8 cm. Height 3.4 cm. Weight 48.3 grams.
