Made from pure white jade, this carp seems to be swimming and leaping against the current of a river. The waves are finely carved. According to Chinese legend (liyutiaolongmen 鲤鱼跳龙门) a carp which is able to leap over the mythical ‘Dragon Gate’ will become a dragon. This carp dates from the middle of the 18th century and was acquired in Hong Kong in the early 1970's. Length 3.9 cm. Width 2.2 cm. Height 2.1 cm. Weight 19.7 cm.
