This little animal puzzled us from the moment it entered our collection. It was acquired at an auction in Amsterdam in 1970. It has the head of a bear but misses the short tail of that animal. Our puzzle was solved when in 2016 an almost identical carving, described as a bear, was sold at the Beijing Gutian Yi Auction. According to the auction, the bear dates from the Jin period (AD 1115 – 1234). Length 4.4 cm. Width 2.5 cm. Height 2.9 cm. Weight 40.1 grams.
