A squirrel on grapes has the hidden meaning of a wish to be promoted to the top of the imperial court. The squirrel symbolizes prosperity and the many grapes express the wish of gaining much status. Part of the skin (rind of the pebble) is left to enhance the aesthetic appeal of this carving which dates from the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1912).
