We saw this flower in the shop window of an antiques shop in Hong Kong in 2026 and entered to get a closer look. Our initial thoughts were that this might be one of the many jade flower copies in the market at the moment but to our surprise this object appeared to be the genuine thing. We even believe that it dates from the Ming period (1368-1644) although a later date cannot be ruled out. The quality of the carving is quite good but there is a crack along the length which is not unusual for flowers of that period, also because these small objects were almost always carved from the leftovers discarded during the carving process of larger jades. This particular type of flower is not depicted in professor Cheng Te-k’un’s book ‘ Jade Flowers and Floral Patterns in Chinese Decorative Art’ .
