Large flower disc of very good quality. The rim is formed by eight ‘ruyi’ symbols. Sixteen conical petals resemble a Chrysanthemum flower, symbol of Longevity because of its health-giving properties. The back is carved in a strong whirling movement. Two pin-sized holes have been drilled into the rim for additional attachment. The style and quality of this disc point at an early date, which could be Yuan (1272 – 1368 AD) or perhaps even Song (960 – 1179 AD). This type of flower is not depicted in professor Cheng Te-k’un’s book ‘Jade Flowers and Floral Patterns in Chinese Decorative Art ‘.
