Xiu yu jade is one of several kinds of jade found within China. It is a semi-translucent, relatively cheap, variety of jade which is mined in Liaoning Province near Xiuyan County, in north-eastern China. The “sunburst” design of this disc consists of two rings of elongated petals , one inside the other and a corona. A tubular perforation in the centre shows traces of breakage on the back. The color is greenish grey. It dates from the Ming period (1368 – 1644). An identical pair of discs (nrs 172 & 173) is depicted in professor Cheng Te-k’un’s book ‘Jade Flowers and Floral Patterns in Chinese Decorative Art’。
