Glass side-viewed flower – (1170)
[1170]

In view of the fact that jade, especially during the Ming period (1368 – 1644), was an expensive material Chinese glass maker managed to make flowers which closely resembled jade ones. The difference between jade and glass can sometimes only be established when comparing chips on the rims. Glass has a very clear shiny chip whereas jade chips look rather rough. This particular type of glass flower seemed to have been quite popular as we have several of them in our collection. This type of flower is not depicted in professor Cheng Te-k’un’s book ‘Jade Flowers and Floral Patterns in Chinese Decorative Art ‘.
