What on first sight looks like the rounded backside of a flower is in fact the front. Did the artisan make a mistake or was he in a hurry because demand exceeded supply? The decoration was kept rather simple so we suspect that this may have been a pupil’s first attempt. The backside is completely flat. This type of flower is not depicted in professor Cheng Te-k’un’s book ‘Jade Flowers and Floral Patterns in Chinese Decorative Art ‘.
