Pair of belt slides made of a pure white 'mutton-fat' jade. Depicted are a vase with two flowers. The word vase (ping 瓶) represents 'peace'. The flowers also convey a hidden message. A chrysanthemum is symbolic for 'forever' and therefore represents 'Longevity'. The Chinese word for lotus is 'lianhua' (莲花) or 'hehua' (荷花). Lian is also the pronunciation of the word for continuous (连) as well as for the word harmony (和) so the lotus has the hidden meaning of 'Continuous harmony'. These pretty belt slides date from the middle of the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1912) and were acquired in America in 2012. Length 5.5 cm. Width 3.3 cm. Depth 1.0 cm. Weight 40.2 grams for the pair.
