To prove that Chinese artisans can still create beautiful objects we include this carving of a boy on an elephant. Despite the fact that it is modern, it contains a symbolic message just like in the old days. A Boy climbing (qixiang) or riding on an elephant is a pun ‘May there be good fortune (jixiang)’. The phrase ‘Riding an elephant’ is close in pronunciation to ‘Good Fortune’or ‘Auspicious (jixiang)’. The boy is holding a branch of the sacred fungus called 'lingzhi' (Longevity) in his hands. How clever was the carver when he used the light streak in a grey piece of jade to depict the boy. The result is almost as striking as some of the old 'Suzhou' carvings which were famous for their use of different colors in one stone. We found this small beauty in Shanghai in 2006. Height 6.1 cm. Length 5 cm. Width 3.8 cm.
