Boy on an elephant – (0078)
[0078]

How clever was the carver when he used the light streak in a grey piece of jade to depict a boy on an elephant . Despite the fact that the carving is modern, it contains a symbolic message just like in the old days. A Boy climbing (qixiang) or riding on an elephant is a pun ‘May there be good fortune (jixiang)’. The phrase ‘Riding an elephant’ is close in pronunciation to ‘Good Fortune’or ‘Auspicious (jixiang)’. The boy is holding a branch of the sacred fungus called 'lingzhi' (Longevity) in his hands. We found this small carving in Shanghai in 2009. Height 5.5 cm. Width 3 cm. Depth 1.9 cm.
