Wet nurse and baby - (6465)
[6465]

We were quite surprised to find this fine carving in Shanghai in 1991 as we had never seen this scene in jade. It is well-known from oil paintings dating back to the early 19th century but never in jade. The carving depicts a wet nurse with a young child at her breast. Next to her head is a cup and saucer, she is holding a fan made of feathers, her hairdo is typical of the (Manchu) period and she is wearing 'lotus' shoes. The bottom is plain without any carving. This charming figure dates from the second half of the Qing period (1644 - 1912). Length 7.6 cm. Width 2.4 cm. Height 2.4 cm. Weight 53.0 grams.
