Horse & rider - Cult Revolution - (2050)
[2050]

Horse and rider carved in China during the Cultural Revolution (1966 - 1976). The rider, who has a Western face, wears a turban, a fur-lined coat and an armband with the characters for 'Red Guard'. He wears the red scarf of the Young Pioneers around his neck. The cream streak within the pinkish and light green jadeite has been cleverly incorporated in the face and body. The carver most probably wanted to depict an Uyghur rider on his stocky horse. We acquired this exquisite carving from an Amsterdam dealer in 1975 who told us that she had bought it from a maharani in India a year earlier. Length 16.5 cm. Width 6.5 cm. Height of the carving 14.5 cm without stand. Published: 'Jade' by Roger Keverne in 1991.
