Pair of small jadeite monkeys – (3909)
[3909]

Two very small monkeys each holding a peach in their hands. The peach is symbol of 'Longevity'. In the popular Ming novel 'Journey to the West' a monkey called 'Sun' stole a peach from the 'Tree of Immortality' in the gardens of Xi Wang Mu, Queen Mother of the West. As a result the monkey became immortal. We do not know what these two bead-like carvings were used for. The carving as well as the material are exquisite. Good color jadeite from Burma (Fei Tsui) was used and the eyes were blackened to improve the expression of the monkey faces. Both date from the end of the Qing period (1644 - 1912) and entered the Lowlands-collection from Hong Kong in 1991. Height 1.5 and 1.7 cm respectively.
