Paper weight in the shape of a pomegranate – (6705)
[6705]

Made from a large piece of jade, of a pale celadon color on one side and with brown spots on the other, this paper weight is a classic example of top quality carving. The carver has managed to create a perfect image of a pomegranate (symbol of a wish to get many children), The depiction of the leaves, bent in a natural way and carved with fine veins, sets this jade creation apart. During the Ming period (1368 - 1644) brown spotted and 'brown sugar' jade was frequently used for fine carvings but we would not dare to date this jade to that illustrious period. Instead we give it a middle Qing (1644 - 1912) date, based on its delicate detailed carving. The paper weight was found in Hong Kong and added to the collection in 1988. Length 6.8 cm. Width 6.3 cm. Height 2.9 cm. Weight 184.5 grams.
