Weight from Urumqi – (6680)
[6680]

Jade weight made of a yellowish colored material. The hollow interior could be filled with lead to arrive at the correct weight. The bottom shows proof of a hard life. We have never seen a jade weight before. We feel that the fact that we discovered it in Urumqi, the capital city of the 'jade region' Xinjiang may explain why it is made of jade and not of iron or bronze as with other Chinese weights. In fact we could have bought two of these weights in 1993 from the same antiques dealer but we chose the best one which is an example of high quality carving. We must admit though that we are still sorry that we did not buy the other one as well. The weight dates from the Qing period (1644 - 1912). Diameter 3.9 cm.
