Toggle in the shape of a black mushroom. The warm brown skin of this carving contrasts very well with the pale greyish material. The people of North China regarded mushrooms (gò 燕) as symbols of 'Fertility' and as a result they are found in great numbers as carved belt toggles just like this one. Umbrella-shaped mushrooms also denote 'Protection and Unity'. Other symbolism associated with mushrooms in China includes a dish from Northern China called stuffed black mushrooms (Xiangu Roubing) meaning a 'Long and happy marriage' which is usually on the menus of wedding dinners. This toggle came from an antiques shop in Shanghai in 2010. Length 5.0 cm. Width 4.2 cm. Depth 1.1 cm. Weight 30.0 grams.
