Fairy with a deer – (6605)
[6605]

Pendant made of pure white 'mutton-fat' jade. On one side is a depiction in high relief of a lady (fairy?) under pine trees, symbol for 'Longevity', because the pine is an evergreen and can endure severe winters. The lady clutches a lingzhi fungus (Longevity) in her hands and is being watched by a deer, also a symbol of a 'Long Life'. The other side shows a poem. It reads: 'Deep in the woods I am alone. Only the moon high above lights everything around me'. The carving of this pendant is well done. It dates from the Qing period (1644 - 1912) and bears the signature of that famous Ming dynasty jade carver Zi Gang. Zi Gang was most probably one of the very few Ming dynasty carver who was allowed to put his name on his carvings. Only a few of his carvings are known but they are all of top-quality. During the Qing period (1644 - 1912) his name was often added to jade carvings as a sign of quality. Found in Hong Kong in 1987. Length 4.2 cm. Width 2.6 cm. Depth 0.95. Weight 16.2 grams.
