Nine quails and ears of grain are depicted on this pendant which dates from the middle of the Qing dynasty (1644 - 1912). Grain symbolizes a good harvest, so in other words 'wealth'. And nine quails ('an') forms a rebus 'May nine generations live together in peace' ('an'). The material is a pale greyish white jade. The carving is nicely done. The pendant was a gift from a friend and has been in the Lowlands-collection since 1993. Length 5.8 cm. Width 5.0 cm. Depth 0.72 cm. Weight 47.8 cm.
