Silver three-pronged hairpin decorated with five pieces of carved jade in the shape of a butterfly. The butterfly is a symbol of long life because the second character in butterfly (hudie 蝴蝶) has exactly the same pronunciation as the character 耋 (die) which means '70 or 80 years of age'. The hairpin dates from the late Qing period (1644 - 1912) and came to the Lowlands-collection from Shanghai in 2008. Length 12.2 cm. Width 4.7 cm.
