Large jadeite (fei tsui) pebble with a nice apple-green color. This pebble originates from Burma (Myanmar). Jadeite is one of the two varieties of gemstone commonly known as ‘jade’. It has a hardness on the Moh-scale of about 6.5 to 7.0. The name ‘jadeite’ is derived from the Spanish word ‘piedra de ijada’ which means ‘stone of the loin’’. The stone was believed to cure kidney ailments if it was rubbed against the side of the afflicted person's body. The Latin version of the word, ‘lapis nephriticus’ is the origin of the name of the other variety of jade , nephrite. Jadeite's color ranges from white through pale apple green to a deep green but can also be blue-green, pink, lavender and a multitude of other rare colors.
