Large boulder of Burmese jade. It was dug up in the Northern part of Myanmar (Burma). Much of the extraction of jadeite in Myanmar is done by ‘boulder mining’ which consists of removing the ‘overburden’ layer of earth to expose the boulders below. This piece broke off from a larger boulder but the rounded form shows that this happened long ago. It originally belonged to a large consignment of ‘gambling stones’ which is the name given by the Chinese to untouched ‘rough’ stones which may or may not contain some much desired jadeite colors used in jewelry. Most stones are of mediocre quality and it is very rare to find emerald green, apple green or lavender colors. Only cutting or grinding away small ‘windows’ will reveal what’s inside. The bottom of our boulder was flattened and shows a light grey stone with darker green inclusions. Length 20.5 cm. Width 11 cm. Depth 9 cm. Weight 3.5 kilograms.
