All that glitters is not gold. Even the most knowledgeable people make mistakes. Not that we pretend to be the most knowledgeable but after fifty years of collecting jades we should know what the real thing looks like. We bought this pebble from an Uyghur jade trader on a market in Shanghai in 2010. It looked convincingly real and we believed to have acquired a bargain. But we should have known better. Bargains of pure white jade are not to be found anymore at the price which we paid for it. The problem on jade markets is that the dealers soak their pebbles in a kind of oil which makes them more shiny and attractive. Under normal conditions the oil does not confuse us but in this case we were taken for a ride. After cleaning the pebble with soap and warm water, fine cracks appeared in the stone and suddenly it looked more like white onyx instead of jade. We decided to keep the stone as a warning when buying jades. The photos do not reflect the true white color which this stone has. Length 5.0 cm. Width 3.5 cm. Depth 1.1 cm. Weight 32.1 grams.
