Steamer from the Late S & A period - (0362)
[0362]

One of the top items in our collection is this bronze steamer. It dates from the late Spring & Autumn period (770 – 476BC) and was actually used as testified by the soot in the ‘heater’. It consists of a sphere which was filled with water for steaming. This sphere fits snugly in a heating bottom, half of which was filled with hot embers. The top part is the actual steamer which has a grate in the bottom allowing the steam to pass through. Still visible on the grate are the remains of a grain, most probably sorghum which was a popular staple at the time. The outside of the steamer is decorated with stylized dragons typical of the period. Attached to each part are two rings for handling the steamer when it was hot. The bronze has a great patina and is in perfect condition. Total height 31.5 cm. Diameter at the top 24.8 cm.
