Shoushan-stone seal topped by a ‘Bixie’ with a puppy on its back. A Bixie (辟邪) is a lion-like mythological Chinese creature which is considered as an exorcising animal. The word Bixie literally means ‘Avoid Evil’. On one side of the seal is an inscription which mentions the name of well-known seal carver Fang Jie Kan (方介堪). Also inscribed are the characters癸丑年which correspond with 1973 as the year of manufacture. Fang lived from 1901 to 1987. Height 9.5 cm. Width 3.8 cm. Depth 3.7 cm.
