Fisherman with red fish signed by Wang Fu An – (1888)

Well-carved elongated shoushan-stone seal topped by a fisherman holding a fish which symbolizes Abundance. The man wears a straw hat on his back and has a woven fish basket at his feet. The carver cleverly used a streak in the stone to carve the face in a different color and the fish in red. Another streak in the stone was used to depict his fishnet. The carver of this seal is Wang Fu An (王福庵) whose name is inscribed on the side. He was a well-known calligrapher and engraver who also went by the names Wang Ti (王褆) and Wang Fu Chang (王福厂). Wang who lived from 1880 – 1960 was one of the founders of the ‘Xi Leng Printing Society’. The seal was carved during the Republic Period (1912 – 1947) and is dated 1927. Height 14.0 cm. Width 3.0 cm. Depth 2.0 cm.
