A bearded old man with a long stick waits for an approaching sampan. He seems to signal to the skipper of the boat that he want to be picked up. Another person, perhaps a servant, follows the old man. The background consists of houses and trees. The deep-carved armorial shows a wolf’s head and the motto in Latin ‘Spectemur Agendo’ which means ‘Let us be judged by our acts’. Under the wolf’s head is a monogram ‘JW’. The crest is flanked by animals which could also be wolves. The intricately fretted border is decorated with flowers and fruits such as finger citrons and pomegranates. The counter dates from the Daoguang period (道光 1820 – 1850). Length 6.9 cm. Height 2.8 cm. Thickness 0.28 cm.
