Driving poles into the ground - (3918)
[3918]

A worker with a huge hammer drives a pole into the bottom of a river most probably as a support for a jetty. His assistant looks sideways waiting for the hammer to fall. A third man brings new poles. This is apparently a popular theme as we have another counter which is very similar. Houses and trees complement the picture. The deep-carved armorial shows an oak tree within a crown (Eastern coronet) which may be the crest of McGarel-Hogg, Baron Magheramorne. Depicted on the left side of the crest is a bird and on the right side sits a cat. The intricately fretted border is decorated with flowers, fruits, scrolling leaves and on the front two butterflies, symbols of a happy marriage. The counter dates from the Daoguang period (道光 1820 – 1850). Length 6.8 cm. Height 2.7 cm. Thickness 0.28 cm.
