It apparently takes the farmer quite some effort to pull one of his buffalos out off the water on this deep-carved oblong gaming counter. A boy, recognizable by his tufts of hair, watches the spectacle with interest. The deep-carved armorial shows a seated lion wearing a crown which is the family crest of Sir Kildare Dixon Borrowes (Baronet). It is flanked by a bird and a horse. The intricately fretted border is decorated with flowers, fruits and on the front with two butterflies, symbols of a happy marriage. The counter dates from the Daoguang period (道光 1820 – 1850). Length 6.9 cm. Height 2.7 cm. Thickness 0.25 cm.
