On a hot day a man is cooling his feet in the water. But the waves made by the sampan apparently startle him as he is pulling his legs up. The sampan is carrying a large jar in the front. The background is formed by houses, trees and mountains. The deep-carved armorial shows a seated lion wearing a crown which is the family crest of Sir Kildare Dixon Borrowes (Baronet). The crest is flanked by seated gentleman with a fan on the left and a creature on the right with long whiskers which might be a short-tailed cat as these were common in China. The intricately fretted border is decorated with flowers and two butterflies, symbols of a happy marriage. The counter dates from the Daoguang period (道光 1820 – 1850). Length 6.9 cm. Height 2.7 cm. Thickness 0.31 cm.
