Cone-shaped heaps of an unknown foodstuff are being sold by a hawker who squats behind a woven basket and tray. We assume that he is selling rice but the quantities are rather small. A boy stares at the food with lots of interest. Is he hungry? The background is formed by a landscape with a lake, houses and trees. The deep-carved armorial shows a seated lion wearing a crown which is the family crest of Sir Kildare Dixon Borrowes (Baronet). The crest is flanked by a lion on the left and a crab on the right. The intricately fretted border is decorated with flowers and two butterflies, symbols of a happy marriage. The counter dates from the Daoguang period (道光 1820 – 1850). Length 6.9 cm. Height 2.8 cm. Thickness 0.26 cm.
