Once raw silk fibers had been processed into strands of yarn, they could be dyed. In this scene two men use sticks to increase the pressure while wringing out the silk threads in order to remove excess dye. The usual landscape with hills, houses, trees and rocks unfolds behind them. The deep-carved armorial shows a seated lion wearing a crown which is the family crest of Sir Kildare Dixon Borrowes (Baronet). The crest is flanked by a bird flapping its wings on the left and a lioness on the right. The intricately fretted border is decorated with flowers and two butterflies, symbols of a happy marriage. The counter dates from the Daoguang period (道光 1820 – 1850). Length 6.9 cm. Height 2.7 cm. Thickness 0.25 cm.
