Green glazed ‘Hill jar’ made of red earthenware. The glaze covers the interior of the jar but not the inside of the lid. The glaze has degraded over time and shows some iridescence. The lid depicts a central peak surrounded by lower peaks with animals such as a dragon, a phoenix, pigs, bears and a dog. The body has a molded frieze depicting more beasts in a mountainous landscape. The molding of the body is less sharp than the lid. The bottom is partly glazed and has three feet in the shape of bears. The Hill jar dates from the Eastern Han period (25 - 220 AD). Height 23 cm. Diameter 19.5 cm. THIS ITEM WAS SOLD AT AUCTION IN 2022.
