Base in the shape of a lion – (0345)
[0345]

Unglazed grey pottery model of a curled up lion. The shape and the hole in the centre prove that it served as a base for something else, perhaps a money tree. According to Chinese legend a money tree (搖錢樹) could bring money and fortune to the people. Cast-bronze money trees were especially popular during the Han period but this base which originates in Northern China dates from the Western Jin period (AD 265 – 316) which is slightly later. Length 23 cm. Width 17.7 cm. Height 14 cm.
