Amusing figure of a man with his typical winter hat. He has a cup in one hand and originally had a short bamboo toothpick in the other for cleaning his teeth. Figures like this are also called ‘mudmen’ which is the literal translation of the Chinese word Ni-ren. They are made of stoneware clay from Shiwan which is a small town located in Guangdong province, China. Pottery making in Shiwan goes back a thousand years but this one dates from the 1980’s. It was made by press-molding and perfected by hand afterwards. Height 25 cm. Width 13.5 cm. Depth 10 cm.
