Monkey on a bell – (3386)
[3386]

Wooden toggle in the shape of a monkey with inlaid eyes sitting on top of a large bell. A bell (zhong) is a pun for ‘to obtain a degree’ (zhong). It therefore represents a wish for success. The monkey, most probably a macaque, is a symbol of Longevity so the combination of the two in this playful scene wishes the recipient a long life and success. The toggle has a good patina and dates from the Qing period (1644 - 1912). Height 5.2 cm. Diameter bell 3.8 cm.
