Silver opium box with an embossed scene of figures in a landscape on front and back. On the lid is an embossed person carrying a Fly whisk (Authority) and a Box (Harmony). This opium box has the looks of Chinese Export Silver. But is it silver? Or paktong? It is similar in style to a silver box with eight horses depicted on page 373 of ‘The Chinese encounter with opium’ by K. Flow. It dates from the late Qing Dynasty (1644 – 1912) or early Republic period(1912 – 1947) and has known extensive use witnessed by the worn away details. On the bottom are faint impressions which look like a mark but are undecipherable now. Height 4.8 cm. Width 4.7 cm. Depth 2.6 cm.
