Hexagonal bulging opium dish - (7560)

Hexagonal bulging serving dish which was used to offer opium to smokers in an opium den. It is made of paktong and copper and has three stamped marks on the bottom. One reads ’Wang Da You’ (王大有) which is presumably the name of a shop and the other one is the brand name ‘Yun Bai (雲白) which means ‘White cloud’. Similar dishes are depicted on page 389 of ‘The Chinese encounter with opium’ by K. Flow. This one dates from around 1920 during the Republic period (1912 – 1947). It now belongs to a private collector in Philadelphia. Height 3.4 cm. Width 3.5 cm.
