End piece of an opium pipe - (6845)
[6845]

An object which takes us back to a period in Chinese history that should better be forgotten. It is the end piece of an opium pipe which has the shape of a clenched fist. Both the carving and the material are exquisite so it must have belonged to a wealthy man. Most opium pipe finials are made of cheap Xiu yu jade and rather roughly carved. This one is superb, carved from expensive Hetian jade, and dates from the Qing period (1644 - 1912). We added it to our collection in 1981. Length 4.3 cm. Width 3.5 cm. Depth 3.5 cm. Weight 71.5 grams.
