Semicircular paktong opium box with bat – (3898)

Half round opium box decorated with a Bat on top. A Bat symbolizes Blessings & Riches. The opium box has a cover which slides off to reveal that the bat is in fact attached to the lid of the box inside. Opium boxes were used to store opium for a smoke along the way. The unmarked box consists of Paktong (see QF 1465) and is lined with copper inside. It dates from the end of the Qing (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Height 4.1 cm. Width 4.2 cm. Depth 2.3 cm. Weight 79 grams.
