Opium box engraved with a puzzling image – (5907)

Paktong opium box which is decorated on one side with a young lady in a garden and a puzzling image on the other. We have no idea what these two half crenellated forms on the back represent and we have also not yet been able to figure out the characters within them. There is an inscription on the lid which reads ‘Zi Zai An Ran’ (自在安然) which means ’In comfort and peace’. The box is unmarked and dates from the end of the Qing period (1644 – 1912) to the early Republic period (1912 – 1947). Height 4.3 cm. Width 4.1 cm. Depth 1.9 cm.
