Snuff box - Book - (5612)
[5612]

A snuffbox was used to store pulverized tobacco which would be sniffed up to create a tickling sensation in the nose usually followed by a sneeze. This snuffbox dates from around 1900 and is shaped like a thick book. The interior is gilt and bears the initials 'ABC' which we have not yet been able to identify. According to CES-expert Alan Marlowe this mark is rare. Engraved on the cover of the box are lotus flowers (Continuous Harmony). The box came from an old Parsee collection in Mumbai, India in 2010 but most probably originates from Southern China. Similar examples Spink (1985. p.56) and Michael Backman (2023). Length 4.5 cm. Width 3 cm. Depth 1.3 cm.
