Small pincushion in the shape of a ladies shoe. Originally it had a soft padding inside in which pins and needles could be stuck. It is shaped like a 'lotus shoe' which was worn by Chinese ladies in the old days. The shoe is made with great care and the decoration is very symbolic. Engraved on the heel is a peony flower (Wealth and Honor), on the sides are acanthus leaves regarded as a symbol of Long life and on the nose is a butterfly (Happy Marriage). Inside are the initials 'GW' of the silversmith Gem Wo who made this little jewel in Canton in around 1850. It was added tot the Lowlands-collection in 2009 and came from Scotland. Length 4.3 cm. Height 4.6 cm. Width 1.5 cm.
