Needle case - Vase with Cymbidium flowers – (1838)

Silver needle case on a chain. The case which is of exceptional quality is shaped like a Vase and symbolizes Peace. It is decorated on one side with a Basket (Abundance) holding a Cymbidium flower (Friendship & Grandchildren) flanked by two boys (Many sons) and it has a depiction of another somewhat larger Cymbidium flower on the reverse. On the neck of the vase are Plum flowers. The five petals of the Plum flower symbolize the Five Blessings, Old age, Health, Wealth, Love of Virtue and a Peaceful death. The long chain is attached to the tubular needle holder inside. Dangling down from the vase is a small bell engraved with another flower. The hook which was used to fasten the needle case to the sash of the owner is decorated with a Butterfly (Blessings & Happiness) and a Plum flower (Five Blessings). The needle case is marked with the name Rui Sheng (瑞盛) who may have been the silversmith or the retailer. It dates from the late Qing period (1644 – 1912). Total length including hook 62.5.cm. Vase length 5.7 cm. Width 2.9 cm. Depth 2.2 cm.
