Thread spool – Ruyi scepter and peonies - (3070-1)

Red lacquered wooden spool decorated on one side with a Ruyi scepter which is a wish granting symbol and wishes its owner ‘Everything he desires’. Clouds symbolizing the ‘Granting of all wishes’ serve as a background for the scepter. On the other side is a peony blossom which symbolizes ‘Wealth and Honor’. ‘Honor’ refers to a high official position or a high status in social life. The spool has been used extensively but is still in good condition. It dates from the end of the Qing period (1644 – 1912). Length 18.5 cm. Width 5.0 cm. Thickness 1.3 cm.
