Liangzhu hair ornament – (6600)
[6600]

For years we believed that this jade ornament was part of a pei belt garniture . But during a visit to Shanghai we bought a reference book which to our surprise showed a hair ornament of a shape which was almost identical, though slightly larger in size, to the one in our collection. The chief editor of this book “Appreciating of Chinese Jade” is Mr Xue Guisheng (1912-2013) who was a member of the National Cultural Relics Appraisal Committee and appraiser for many year at the Shanghai Curio Shop. Our hair ornament was most probably originally white before it was permeated by iron which gave it beautiful reddish brown streaks. The holes in our piece were drilled from two sides and do not completely align. Three drill holes are, according to the book a characteristic feature of Liangzhu cultural artifacts. We discovered this piece in Hong Kong in 1992. Width 5.0 cm. Height 3.0 cm. Depth 0.49 cm. Weight 15.3 grams.
