Amulet with an animal – (8001)

Silver amulet engraved with an animal and peaches on one side and characters on the other. Is the animal a badger (huan) or a squirrel? We assume that it is a badger which symbolizes ‘Joy’. Squirrels are almost always depicted with grapes and the fruits in this engraving are peaches which stand for ‘Longevity’. The characters on the back ‘Chang Ming Bai Sui’ refer to ‘Longevity’ as well and the name of the owner, Cai Wu Fang, is mentioned in small characters. The amulet dates from the end of the Qing period (1644 – 1912) or early Republic period (1912 -1947). Height 5.3 cm. Width 4.3 cm. Depth 0.13 cm.
